  1. Abstract

    Feedbacks from tropical instability waves (TIWs) on the seasonal cycle of the eastern Pacific Ocean are studied using two eddy‐rich ocean simulations, with and without TIWs. By warming the equatorial waters by up to 0.4°C through nonlinear advection in boreal summer and fall, TIWs reduce the amplitude of the seasonal cycle in upper ocean temperatures. In addition, TIWs stabilize the upper part of the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) through enhanced barotropic energy conversion, leading to a year‐round weakening by −0.15 m s−1and preventing an unrealistic re‐intensification in boreal fall usually found in non‐eddy resolving models. A coarser simulation at 1‐degree horizontal resolution fails to reproduce the TIW‐induced nonlinear warming of equatorial waters, but succeeds in inhibiting the EUC re‐intensification. This suggests a threshold effect in TIW strength, associated with the model's ability to simulate eddies, which may be responsible for long‐standing biases displayed by global climate models in this region.

  2. Water plays a critical role in our living and manufacturing activities. The continuously growing exploitation of water over the aquifer poses a risk for over-extraction and pollution, leading to many negative effects on land irrigation. Therefore, predicting aquifer water levels accurately is urgently important, which can help us prepare water demands ahead of time. In this study, we employ the Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) model to predict the saturated thickness of an aquifer in the Southern High Plains Aquifer System in Texas and exploit TensorBoard as a guide for model configurations. The Root Mean Squared Error of this study shows that the LSTM model can provide a good prediction capability using multiple data sources, and provides a good visualization tool to help us understand and evaluate the model configuration.

  3. We report results of the crystal growth and characterization of undoped and Dy-doped TlPb2Br5 for applications in infrared (IR) lasers and nuclear radiation detection. TlPb2Br5 (TPB) was synthesized from commercial starting materials of PbBr2 and TlBr and further purified through a combination of zone-refinement and directional solidification. For doping experiments, 2 wt% of DyBr3 was added to the purified TPB material. Crystal growth of TPB and Dy: TPB was carried out in a two-zone tube furnace by a vertical Bridgman method. Following optical excitation at ~1.36um, the Dy: TPB crystal exhibited efficient mid-IR emission bands centered at 2.87um and 4.35um with room-temperature lifetimes of 9.5 ms and 5.2 ms, respectively. The peak emission cross-sections were determined to be ~0.8x10-20 cm2 and ~0.5x10-20 cm2, respectively, which makes Dy: TPB a promising candidate for mid-IR laser applications. Besides its potential as a solid-state laser host, an undoped TPB crystal was also tested for gamma-ray detection. Using Cs-137 and Am-241 sources resulted in energy resolutions for gamma-rays as good as 1-2% (FWHM) at room-temperature under non-optimized conditions.
